The following study is a kinesiological analysis of the squash stroke for both the forehand and backhand. For the sake of definitions, kinesiology is “the scientific study of human movement”, whilst analysis can be defined as a “detailed examination of the elements or structure of something”.
In short the author describes the elements, specifically musculature that goes into executing the forehand and backhand shot. This analysis is from the 80’s, so some of the technical aspects of the execution described would largely be irrelevant to the modern game due to advances in technology and different tactics. Despite this, there are still relevant movement patterns such as pronation of the wrist during the finishing of the forehand swing etc that still apply and need to be addressed in a training program. You wont find any hard numbers defining movement velocities of limbs and joints in this analysis as it is heavily descriptive. In spite of this, there is some value in identifying the similarities in movement patterns and relevant contribution of muscle and joint actions to the modern game so that one gains a greater understanding of what is happening during a squash swing. If one is not inclined to actually read the paper, it is probably worth just browsing it for the anatomical illustrations of each action of the swing phase.
